Making Zongzi to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi 粽子 (glutinous rice wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.

To celebrate the traditional festival and experience the local cultural at Omeida, we organized students to learn how to make zongzi.

Ramona’s last week in Omeida, she was excited to celebrate with we all and managed to learn from the local.

Willem quickly learned how to make zongzi in different shapes.

Wency was quite patient to share her skills with Sarah.

Magic looked skillful. With the help of her, Kim did a wonderful job.

Juline and Kim gave their whole mind to make zongzi.

We all were so glad to celebrate together and hope more opportunities to experience and spread Chinese culture. Learning Chinese in Yangshuo, enjoy your life in Omeida.

The way to make zongzi:
Take two or three bamboo leaves and fan them out slightly. Make a tight cone or funnel shape with them at about 2/3rds of the way down the length. Fill with rice mixed with beans. Usually the meats and egg are placed towards the center of the package, well buried in the rice. When you are done packing, tightly fold the leaves over and around your cone and bind with string.
