Today is a very exciting day not only for Omeida Chinese Academy family, but also for the whole China! Today is Chinese New Years Eve. So, we were decorating our school, went to the market to buy food for barbeque. We did buy firecrackers too!

Chinese New Year is the most important and the longest celebration in China full of traditions, symbolism and importance and it has been celebrated for more than 4,000 years already! We wish you would be here in Yangshuo to celebrate C...hinese New Year with us, to make dumplings together, have a big dinner feast, dance the lion and dragon dances as well as light those awesome firecrackers! Omeida Chinese Academy team wants to wish you a harmonious year full of adventures, smiles and new discoveries! Happy New Year from Omeida! 新年快乐 Xīnnián kuàilè!

Some Chinese New Year facts and traditions:

- 2015 is a year of the “Goat” according to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig).
- Red color is believed to ward off bad luck and misfortune. For the people born in a year of the goat (1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003), red underwear is a must for 2015.
- Dragon dances are performed at New Year's day as it is believed that they can scare away evil spirits and bring good luck to the community. Dragon is also called a symbol of China.

Couplets and lanterns have always been indispensible parts of the Spring Festival. See how we had a great time decorating our school!!

So excited to gather at the Chinese Academy for the special shopping of Spring Festival!

Thats how the street next to Omeida Chinese Academy looked like! Firecrackers, lion dancing, people shouting, smoke everywhere. Awesome and completely mind-blowing!

The firecrackers and firework tradition began with the legend of Nian , a ferocious monster that was afraid of the color red and loud noises. It is believed the noisy fireworks scared the monster. As well as the more fireworks and noise there are, the more luck there will be in the New Year.

You can not start your New Year without Chinese dumplings! So, we not only ate them, but made them ourselves as well. Delicious! 好吃!

HAPPY SPRING FESTIVAL, EVERYONE!!!!
