Culture class-Making Zongzi to celebrate Dragon boat festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the duan wu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating duan wu (glutinous rice wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.
First we learn the history of the Dragon Boat Festival.
Let’s start! Take two or three bamboo leaves and fan them out slightly. Make a tight cone or funnel shape with them at about 2/3rds of the way down the length. Fill with rice mixed with beans. Usually the meats and egg are placed towards the center of the package, well buried in the rice. When you are done packing, tightly fold the leaves over and around your cone and bind with string.
