Saturday 15th January 2011 at 6.30pm Odar and Cathy welcomed guests to the celebration of their daughter Olivia turning 1 month of age at City in the City Restaurant in Yangshuo.
Olivia slept though most of the evening’s festivity opening her eyes for a glimpse just occasionally. She was snuggled up in pretty baby clothes and a warm blanket and held by her caring nanny whilst her mum, Cathy joined Odar in greeting guests and going from table to table to drink a toast.
Tables were decorated with pink napkins and laden with an assortment of sweets, snacks and drinks followed by traditional Chinese cuisine. As is the Chinese custom guests gave red packets and our hosts gave red painted hard boiled eggs and snacks to all the guests. How lovely and thoughtful of Odar and Cathy to include teachers and staff to this special occasion.
Westerners don’t have this 1 month celebration but the closest celebration we have is a baby’s baptism/christening, when usually the guests are close family and friends and rarely people that we work for and with. So we felt like this is our family in China which is really nice because while we are in China we miss out on our own family gatherings.
I noticed many familiar faces amongst the guests including Kelly who owns a restaurant in Yangshuo, the landlords of the teacher’s apartment building and previous staff of Omeida. Some of us including myself managed to give Olivia a cuddle and we look forward to seeing little Olivia and Cathy more often.
It is a Chinese custom for the mother and baby to stay home for the first month and now that the first month has passed Cathy, who looks the picture of good health, will no doubt be popping in to Omeida College. We hope she brings Olivia with her sometimes.
Thanks Odar, Cathy and Olivia we all enjoyed the celebration!
