福“倒”了fú dào le
福fú is everywhere in China, because of its good meaning, which is considered that can bring people good luck in Chinese culture. During the spring festival, people paste福fú on the doors, windows and walls.
Last week Wednesday, we had our Chinese teacher Zhuge at student lounge giving a Chinese calligraphy class. Zhuge is a talented and knowledgeable Chinese teacher and she is very good at Chinese calligraphy. In the class, Zhuge gave us a presentation of Chinese calligraphy, talked about笔bǐ墨mò纸zhǐ砚yàn which called “ scholar's four jewels ” ( writing brush , ink stick , ink slab and paper ). Our calligraphy class started with two short stories which told by Zhuge. At the meantime, she brought us her 福fú. 福fú has arrived at Omeida. Good luck is coming to everybody.
It is said that in the ancient China, a servant decorated house before Chinese spring festival for his host. While he pasted the福fú upside down without paying attention. The host was going to punish the servant for his carelessness. While the servant was very witted to explain that 福fú was upside down meaning 福“倒”了fú dào le. “倒”（upside down）has the same pronunciation as 到（arrive）. The host was very happy with this explanation and rewarded his servant instead of punishment. Since then, most people paste 福fú in the way upside down praying for good luck, good fortune.
To learn Chinese calligraphy, you have to know how to hold a brush straightly sitting in a proper position. Zhuge set us an example to use a brush and how to move our wrists to write in a right way. The character 福fú has many strokes. When you learn to write it with brush, should be very patient and slowly.
Look, what an excellent job our student did. Quite sure, you could make a nice character 福fú after hard practice. Then you could paste it on the door when Chinese New Year comes.
