The Dragon Boat Festival

We made 粽子zòng zǐ (rice dumpling) to celebrate a very traditional Chinese culture which is called Dragon Boat Festival and 端午节 duān wǔ jiē in Chinese.

Teacher Phoebe is showing a
粽子zòng zǐ that she made.

The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the Solar  calendar.

The origins of Dragon Boat Festival
The Story  of QuYuan
Qu was a minister of the State of Chu, during theWarring States Period(475-221BC). Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month.
What do people do on the day?
  • People hang mugwort leaves at their door for keeping away evil.
  • Dragon boat racing:as the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.
  • Making 粽子zòng zǐ. It's an essential food of the Dragon Boat Festival. Now the fillings are more diversified, including jujube and bean paste, fresh meat, and ham and egg yolk.

Qu drowned himself in sacrifice for his country the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar. Local people tried to retrieve his body. When they failed, they made
粽子zòng zǐ to throw into Miluo river, hoping the fish and shrimp would eat 粽子zòng zǐ and not his body.
