Culture lesson instrument of Hulusi

The culture lesson for this week is about an instrument call Hulusi, what is thi, hulusi (simplified: 葫芦丝; pinyin: húlúsi) or cucurbit flute is a free reed wind instrument from China and the Shan State. It is held vertically and has three bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest; the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes. It is not uncommon for a hulusi to have only one drone pipe while the second outer pipe is merely ornamental. The drone pipe has a finger hole, which allows it to be stopped. Advanced configurations have keyed finger holes similar to a clarinet or oboe, which can greatly extend the range of the hulusi to several octaves.

It's our pleasure to invite Mr. Bindi to

teach us Hulusi. He has been playing Hulusi at West Street for many years, he is professor of this instrument.

Hulusi sounds fantastic, look at our students, they are surprised by this beautiful melody sounds.

OK, it's time for us to try, first step is to use your hands to press the hole of Hulusi, and then to blow, press the differents hole will make different sounds. While you need to control how strong you have to blow it. Because different strenth of blowing can make different music notes.

Mr. Bindi is teaching Amelia and Brook to play  Hulusi and bamboo flute. Both of them blowed very well.

After this lesson,we learned about culture of this instrument and also everyone knews to play Hulusi.
