Paper Cutting Class
On Wednesday, August 8th 2011, Omeida Chinese Academy had a paper cutting class. Chinese teacher Shirleen taught foreign students the Chinese paper cutting tradition and how to do it.
The Chinese art of paper cutting is called Zhong guo jian zhi (Chinese Paper Cut) is made either by cutting using scissors or by sculpting the patterns and shapes by using a scalpel like knife. The paper commonly used for Jian Zhi is called Xuan Paper. This paper comes from Anhui province where it is made from the fibers of a pine tree. Chinese people use these paper cutouts to decorate their houses during festivals. During the Tang Dynasty, women even used them as hair ornaments.
In this class, students not only learned facts about the Chinese art of paper-cutting, they also had a hands-on experience in making the paper-cut themselves. It's really a meaningful experience.
Shirleen is telling foreign students the meanings of these Chinese paper cutouts.
Firstly, we need to fold the paper.
Shirleen wants to teach the students how to make goldfish, the first step was to draw half a fish on the red paper.

Shirleen also taught how to cut a Chinese cabbage.In Chinese,we call cabbage as "Bai Cai",which means very easy to become rich.
