Culture Class-Learn to Sing Beijing Opera
Beijing Opera or Peking Opera is regarded as the national opera in China for it has a long history and a complete system of stage performance. It has not only beautiful melody, but also beautiful lyrics.
Culture lesson for this Tuesday was Beijing opera. We began with a song—说唱脸谱which refers to the characters of facial makeup. The elaborate and gorgeous facial make-up and costumes are two distinguished characteristics of Beijing Opera. The rules for costumes are strictly based on rank, occupation and life style, and there are special costume with different colors and designs for each role.
For this lesson, our purpose is to learn—苏三起解. Everyone has a high enthusiasm about Susan. Susan was falsely accused of murdering her husband to whom she was sold. And then she was imprisoned and sentenced to death. An old prison guard had sympathy for Susan and decided to help her. The old prison guard escorted Susan out of Hongtong County to Taiyuan City for appeal. Susan won in the appeal. The story ended with a happy ending.
All of students sang苏三起解together to an end in this lesson.
