Culture Class—Making Chinese Dumplings (饺(jiǎo)子(zi))

Chinese dumpling (Jiaozi) is a traditional Chinese food, which is essential during holidays or festival in Northern China. But now, Jiaozi becomes one of the most widely loved foods around China. Because of it is one of the most important dishes in Chinese New Year.

Since the shape of Jiaozi is similar to ancient Chinese gold or sivil ingots, they symbolize weath. It is said that the member of a family get together to make Jiaozi during the New Year’s Eve. They may hide a coin in one of the Jiaozi. Then the people who get the coin will likely have a good fortune in the next year. So, Jiaozi has become a part of the Chinese culture.

It is a big job to prepare the material of such as wheat flour, meat, and vegetables and so on. It’s also difficult to make it by different ways. Jiaozi may be cooked by boiling, steaming,  simmering, frying, or baking. Our culture lesson this Tuesday was going to make boiled Jiaozi.

Everyone learned to make Jiaozi very seriously and very enjoyed the process.

It is delicious to eat them with dipping in soy sauce, vinegar and garlic.
