Beijing Opera Culture Class
During this week's cultural lesson, students learned all about Beijing Opera. Our student manager, Twelve, has performed Beijing Opera for a number of years winning a number of competitions. He taught students all about the history and roles of Beijing opera before the students attempted to sing famous song 唱脸谱 and 苏三起解. This lesson we mainly talked about the roles on Beijing Opera and learned to sing苏三起解.
The role on the Beijing Opera stage fall into four major roles——Sheng生, Dan旦, Jing净, Chou丑.
Sheng生: It's a common name of male characters and composed of Lao Sheng and Xiao Sheng. Lao Sheng refers to the middle-aged man with a beard who acts as the decency figure; for example, Zhugeliang in Red Cliff. Xiao Sheng means young man without a beard. Zhouyu in Red Cliff is a representative of Xiao Sheng.
Dan旦: The general name for female characters can be divided into Qingyi, Huadan, Laodan, Wudan. Qingyi is also called Zhengdan, who mainly plays the part of the strong-minded middle-aged woman who behaves elegantly. Huadan refers to little girls who often live in the bottom of society. Laodan refers to the senior woman and Wudan indicates the female who is good at fighting.
Jing净: Painted face often refers to male characters with unique appearance or personality, such as Baozheng and Caocao. Besides, Chou is a comic role or villainous character or righteous person. The actor's nose is painted by a piece of white powder, making him or her easily recognizable.
Chou丑: The Chou is a male clown role. The Chou usually plays secondary roles in a troupe. Indeed, most studies of Peking opera classify the Chou as a minor role. Chou has the meaning "ugly". This reflects the traditional belief that the clown's combination of ugliness and laughter could drive away evil spirits.
