Door Gods

Our topic of cultural lesson this Wednesday was Door Gods门神( mén shén ). It started with an animated movie-Little Door Gods.Door Gods are supposed to keep evil spirits from entering.

The custom originated during the Tang Dynasty (618- 907 AD) when the Emperor honored two loyal generals by having their portraits painted on the door, due to their bravery in fighting intruders and evil spirits. Our Chinese teacher Vivian gave us a speech of the origin of Door Gods. She showed us how the characters门神( mén shén ) formed.

The door Gods usually face each other in pairs. There are two types of door Gods: martial door Gods and literary door Gods. Martial door Gods are usually generals, loyal men and great fighters. They arm with full of battle armor and weapons.

The literary door Gods, inner door Gods as they were named as well, are of a civil nature, based on scholar-official figures or historical scholars. Popular characters of literary door Gods are Fu, Lu, and Shou.

After this cultural lesson, everyone knows what Door Gods are, how differences between martial Gods and literary Gods.
