Pottery Firsthand Experience Last Saturday
China has one of the oldest continuous civilizations. A country as vast as China with so long-lasting a civilization has a complex social and visual history, within which pottery plays a major role.

Last Saturday we visited to a pottery workshop in Jima, a small village of Yangshuo. Pottery has a long history in China. We all were very excited to have such an unforgettable experience. After the firsthand experience, we learned a lot. Such as how to make a pottery, you should be creative, during molding you have to be more patient, as taking care of your kids and also learned that you must dare to imagine and to take action.
Mr. Xie is our teacher today. Before we do it our own, he gives us a brief lesson about pottery and shows us the steps of making a pottery. For example, first of all, we need to have a figure in our mind, what are we going to make? Second, we need to lift the clay up and press it down for at least three to four times, so that the clay will be in a very good condition for making a model. And then, we must to find the centre of the clay and control the clap turn-plate. Be very careful, the speed of turn-plate is a very important element to shape a model. At last, you may follow your inspiration to make your artwork.

A lovely boy Marx, he is from Ukraine who is the youngest students here today. He came to say “Oh, it’s very nice.” to everyone very now and then. We had a lot of fun with him.

Mr. Xie has many beautiful potteries and display at his workshop.

People are very interested in pottery and they do really enjoying this experience. As the saying goes, great oaks grow from little acorns, and a journey of one thousand miles begins with one step. If you want to make an exquisite work, you have to practice more step by step.
