Culture Lesson- Chinese Fans
Fans enjoy a long history of about 3 to 4 thousand years in China. China is always regarded as the kingdom of fans. Last Wednesday we talked about Chinese fans from its history, made of material, classification, way of usage and so on. Our lesson started with a Chinese riddle”有风不动无风动，不动无风动有风”. Our students they made different guess. And some know the characters, and they gave the answer in seconds. Later the one who gave the right answer explained the riddle in English. If there is a wind, it doesn’t move, if there is no wind, it moves. If it doesn’t move, there is no wind, if it moves, there is a wind.
Just thought about it in few minutes, everyone got the answer-扇子. Learn Chinese in a fun and active way.
From the riddle we know, fan is a cooling tool. However, in the ancient China, fan was not used for cooling, but for keeping sands off and sheltering from the sun for the emperor. Gradually, is played its main role as a tool for cooling.
Fans can be divided by shapes and material. From shape, we have round fan and folding fan. Classified, there are bamboo strip fan, palm leaf fan, feather fan, thin silk fan and sandalwood fan and so on. While nowadays, to produce an exquisite fan, various artistic techniques has to be integrated, including carving, weaving, knotting, calligraphy, painting, poker-work, embroidery, etc. The surfaces of such fans as sandalwood fans, bone fans, ivory fans and shell fans are usually carved with exquisite patterns.
Chinese fan has a variety of functions, can be used in a wide way. For example, Taichi fan is played in Taichi. Some feather fans are used in a stage dance performance, Chinese Opera and house decoration.
End of the class, we designed and made our own fans-painted paper folding fan.
