Chinese Shadow Puppetry 皮影戏 pí yǐng xì
We learned, we played, we had fun. Weeks ago, our Chinese teacher Jasmine had an interesting cultural class. The lesson started with a love story of Han Dynasty’s emperor and one of his wives. (In the ancient China, the emperor had many wives. It is said that the emperor has to guarantee himself having his own offspring; so that his empire will be inherited long last.)
Maks comes from Ukraine. He is a three-years-old boy. On Wednesday he and his parents came and joined our cultural class. He spent most os his Wednesday afternoon with us at School to learn Chinese culture. How serious they are! Serge, his dad, cultivates him in our Chinese culture. It is a very good way to cultivate kids since they were young. And Maks gets the very good chances in Yangshuo Omeida.
Laddy Anna attends our courses everytime. And she is very enjoyable in Chinese culture.

Teacher Jasmine was telling stories. Students got interested in those stories. One of them says… According to legend, one of the wives of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was devastated, and he summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The officers made a shape of the wife using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of the leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oil lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life.
After the presentation, people strated to make their shadow puppets. There are seven steps to prepare to make a shadow puppet. At the beginning, you have to find good leather or a skin of an animal. Secondary, you may draw a nice picture on a paper which you wish to make. Then copy the picture on the animal skin. After this, here comes carving which using special knives to carve it. The fifth step is to paint the model as it needs. And we can leave the model in the shadow drying it. The last step, after it gets dry, is to assemble it. So all this seven steps makes a shadow puppet.
We made our puppet and we played it with a lot of fun. The name of the play is the Real Monkey King and the Fake One 真假孙悟空zhēn jiǎ sūn wù kōng.
