Chinese Cultural Treasure——Beijing Opera京剧jīng jù

Beijing Opera is a form of Chinese opera which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics.

Beijing Opera is a national treasure with a history of more than 200 years. To celebrate the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1790) 80th birthday his the four big opera troupes were summoned by the emperor into the capital to perform In order to make it an excellent job, the four troupes played their representative plays on the same stage.

The corporation was a great show and got the reputation from the society. Soon it had been talked through the palaces to the folk. Gradually, they combined with Kun opera, Hui opera, Han opera and the local opera of Beijing of the time. Over a period of more than half a century of combination and integration of various kinds of opera there evolved the present Beijing Opera.

Beijing Opera becomes the most significant of all operas in China, and it has a richness of repertoire, great number of artists and audiences, that give it a profound influence in China and plays a large role in Chinese culture.

I was singing a part of the opera Faerwell My Concubine. It's one piece of classical Peking opera. The woman,Consrt Yu, deeply loved the King Xinagyu, and when he failed in a war, she committed suicide for him.

The roles on the Beijing Opera stage fall into four major roles-- While we were talking about the main roles of Beijing Opera, Claudia was performing the character Dan's walking which showing us the characteristic of the role.

Beijing Opera facial mask is also called Lianpu. It is formed through dramatic artists' long-term practice and their understanding and judgment of the roles in plays. It is the colorful dressing on actors' faces. By using transformative and exaggerated figures, professional spectators would easily tell the characteristic of a role. In this way, it is called 'the picture of hearts'. There are certain formats of the facial painting in the aspect of color, type and shape. Usually, eyes, foreheads and cheeks are painted like wings of butterflies, swallows and bats.

Different facial masks have different meanings. Here we example some typical masks. Blue represents staunchness and astuteness. Red indicates courage, bravery and loyalty. Yellow signifies ambition, fierceness and cool-headedness. White suggests sinisterness, ruthless, suspiciousness and craftiness.

Known the meaning of the facial masks, and our students and teachers painted the characters they like with the meaningful color.
