Chinese Spring Festival is around the corner. And it’s the biggest festival for Chinese. People work in different aspects now will be leaving for holiday. How do Chinese people celebrate their Spring Festival? When do they start to celebrate it? How long does the Spring Festival last? Do you know anything about Chinese Spring Festival customs春节习俗chūn jiē xí sú?

In Chinese lunar calendar, there are twelve animal signs. The Chinese zodiacs are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Year of 2017 is the Year of Rooster.

Before the Spring Festival, there is Preliminary Eve we call it 小年(xiǎo nián) which is the day of December 23rd(the dates will be referring to later are all talked in lunar calendar). According to the legends, on December 23rd, the Kitchen God reports his sum of the year to the Heaven Emperor. People pray for bountiful harvests, good health, and good fortunes and so on. They believe that the Kitchen God will bring them good wishes from heaven. Therefore people offer rich sacrifices to the Kitchen God, especially a kind of sugar snack called Tanggua that he likes very much. The sugar is decocted from millet and malt by boiling. Since then on, to sacrifice to the Kitchen God became a tradition. And also the day of December 23rd is the beginning of Spring Festival Celebration.

The coming day is to clean houses. There is nursery song about how people do their preparation for the coming New Year. 二十三,糖瓜粘;二十四,扫房日;二十五,做豆腐;二十六,买年肉;二十七,杀年鸡;二十八,把面发;二十九,去打酒;三十晚上熬一宿。


People make Tofu, go shopping and decorating their houses, stay up late seeing the arriving New Year in with their family by setting off firecrackers and fireworks. The last day of December is the Eve day. People decorate their homes with spring red couplets, window paper-cuts and lanterns. During the day, they sacrifice to their ancestors and the Gods they believe in. Families and friends go for an Eve dinner, sing a karaoke or watch the Chinese Spring Festival Gala Show on TV at home.

Chinese Spring Festival lasts fifteen days long. The 15th of New Year, we call it Lantern Festival Day. People make beautiful lanterns and write riddles putting them on the lanterns. The most important thing is to make Tangyuan which is a small pingpong ball size food made of dough and stuffing. After the Lantern Festival, people go back to work, students leave home for school and farmers start to farm their lands.
