过年了guò nián le Ⅱ

During the Chinese New Year, many of the large cities in China are empty. I mean they are not that crowded. People left their work place for home for Chinese New Year.

We were waked up by the first cock crow from a beautiful dream. But as for this year, it’s the year of rooster, so I think we are lucky by calling awoke by them. And the New Year’s Day is the day of Rooster. When creating all living beings, Nvwa, a Goddess of Chinese mythology, created six creatures before human beings. The six creatures are rooster, dog, pig, xo, ram and horse.
It was a wonderful day. Look, everybody is on a bike. Are they up to somewhere now? You are right, but not now. They have something to do before set off to explore Yangshuo on the New Year’s Day.

The first day of Chinese New Year, people set off firecrackers to welcome the New Year and then open their workshop, market and school and so on. It has been a tradition for thousand years that symbolizes making a good start. As the legends say, there is a monster called Nian which is always grabbing whatever things it can be from the folk. Nian knows that during the Spring Festival there are many children playing outside with their fellows. So it also frightens and seizes children while they are celebrating Spring Festival. People found that Nian is scared of red things, firecrackers and fireworks. In that case, they decorated their homes with red paper-cuts, red spring couplets, and red lanterns and so on. They even dressed their children with red clothes. Red color in China indicates the coming New Year days are booming, people’s life is getting better and better.

In most of China’s families, people make dumplings symbolizing good fortune and family’s reunion. Dumpling in Chinese is 饺子jiǎo zǐ. Out looking of饺子jiǎo zǐ is like an ancient Chinese money-gold or silver ingot. It’s said that people who can pick up the dumpling which is put a coin in will be very lucky in the coming year.

The day we did not only make dumplings, but also made Baozi. Our Chinese teacher Phoebe taught us how to make Baozi. She got assistance from Alfie who was chopping the ingredients.

Some of our students have made dumpling before. This time they were very interested in learning making Baozi step by step.

Shahknaz(四毛) is a Russian girl. It was the first time for to have Chinese Spring Festival in China. She was assigned to roll the dough.

This is a Baozi we made. Seen from the appearance, it wraps something inside. So we say bao in Chinese.

Baozi are steamed by a Baozi steamer.

Eric was cooking dumplings. We also cooked some steamed dumplings for as required.

We were enjoying a dumpling banquet after hard work making. In China, uesd to be, we call it a happy time with family and friend. This is the time for family members reunion.
Secetion two of the New Year's Day was cycling to a Mountain in Yangshuo for a New Year worship. It was
a visit to Yangshuo Village God Temple to pray for without mishap, a visit to Dragon King Temple to pray for good harvest, and a visit to City God Temple to pray for prosperity of the city and people.

It's an ancient stone gate without doors. But it had doors we could tell, seen from iside, some found there still are few holes for keeping the doors stand.

After a break in the Village God temple, people were surprised by the view along the rock steps and could not wait to see more fascinated spots they've never seen before.

The second stop is the Dragon king temple.

There is a well after the Dragon King temple. All of our students were very interested in the rock carving overhead. The carving is a thick coils of a dragon guarding the well. The way down to the well is very steep and  it can be allowed one person passing once.

The top is the
City God Temple.

We met some locals were burning incense and offering sacrifice to the City God.

Some of our students tried to learn how Chinese make a respective offering and sacrifice to Gods or ancestors.

The New Year's Day was end up with full of good bless and worships from the Gods. But our Spring Festival celebration is keeping moving and lasts 15 days long till the Lantern Festival.
